Common questions about wait times
How often are these wait times updated?
We update this page every Monday based on data from US Travel.State.Gov and community reports from students who recently booked appointments. Exact availability changes daily — treat these as estimates, not guarantees.
Can I book an appointment at a different consulate from my home state?
Yes. There is no requirement to appear at the consulate nearest to your home. Many students choose Hyderabad or Kolkata for shorter wait times. The visa decision is not affected by which consulate you use — only by your profile and preparation.
How far in advance should I book?
Aim to book at least 6–8 weeks before your intended interview date at Mumbai and Delhi. For Hyderabad and Kolkata, 3–4 weeks is usually sufficient. Book as early as possible — cancellations sometimes open up sooner slots.
Does the wait time affect my chance of approval?
No. Wait times reflect demand and consulate capacity, not selectivity. Hyderabad has both the shortest current wait time and the highest historical approval rate in our dataset (92.2%). Shorter wait does not mean easier interview — preparation is what determines the outcome.
What time should I arrive for my interview?
Arrive 15–20 minutes before your appointment slot. Most F1 interview windows open at 7–8 AM. Bring all documents organized — the officer sees your documents before they see you. First impression starts with the document packet.
How long does the actual interview take?
Based on 6,867 interview accounts in our dataset, 84% of interviews last under 2 minutes. The longest interviews (5+ minutes) typically involve detailed funding questions or prior refusals. Preparation matters more than duration.
